Ashton secures Grand Slam of Darts return after breezing through Women’s Qualifier

Lisa Ashton secured her Grand Slam of Darts return on Friday evening as she whitewashed Corrine Hammond to win the Women’s Qualifier in Barnsley.

Ashton, who clinched a coveted professional tour card in January at Qualifying School, dropped a mere six legs throughout the evening to reign victorious at the Barnsley Metrodome.

‘The Lancashire Rose’ eased past Christina Cronin in her opening match, before thrashing her good friend and former Women’s World Championship semi-finalist Maria O’Brien.

Ashton recorded an average in excess of the 88 mark and ton-plus checkouts of 115 and 130 in comfortably beating O’Brien 5-1 to move four wins away from a triumphant campaign.

Fallon Sherrock’s twin sister Felicia Blay and Sweden’s Vicky Pruim were subsequently brushed aside by Ashton as she booked her place in the semi-finals.

Ashton then saw off two-time women’s world master Deta Hedman in a cagey affair, before whitewashing Australian Hammond in a one-sided final.

The Bolton-based thrower will now return to Wolverhampton from November 16-24 as she hopes to build on her debut appearance from last time around.

Elsewhere, it was an inspired run to the final for former Women’s World Championship finalist Hammond, having entered the qualifier on the back of her Challenge Tour exploits last weekend.

The reigning German Masters champion defeated both teenage sensation Beau Greaves and Sherrock leading up to the final, and proved something of a giant-killer in South Yorkshire.

Hammond battled back from behind on two occasions, coming from 4-1 adrift to see off 16-year-old Greaves and 3-1 down to overcome the famed Sherrock.

More than 80 female throwers will return to the Barnsley Metrodome on Saturday morning as the PDC Women’s Series commences.

Four £5,000 tournaments will be held across the weekend, with the two highest earners qualifying for December’s prestigious World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace.
