Catching Up With ” Mace The Ace” Chris Mason – Interview With Darts Planet TV
Thanks so much to Chris Mason for answering these questions we had for him, we really appreciate his time to give us this interview.
I had so many questions that I wanted to ask Chris, especially as he was one of my favourite darts players, and now my favourite darts commentator and anaylist, thought I had been limit them down so I did not bore him to dead. Hope one day I may get the chance to meet him for a pint and a couple legs of darts, that would be the icing on the cake.
These are the questions that I asked Chris …….
How much do you miss playing on the PDC circuit?
I miss the camaraderie and the interaction with my old pals but ultimately I don’t miss the stresses a strains of being on tour full time.
Are you going to try q school again in the future?
I am genuinely still undecided, some days I still fell I have something left but I am not sure it would be the best thing for my well documented mental health.
What advice do you give to any guys doing the q school?
PPP = PPP Piss Poor Preparation = Piss Poor Performances
I think its a very mixed bag of players that try Q-School, some are there for the experience some are there with the genuine hope of getting a card. Ultimately go enjoy the experience and give it 100%.
How much has darts changed since you were playing?
Not that much apart from the amount of events and opportunities to play, I suppose there is a lot more young ambitious players than in my time.
Do you like the needle between players on stage, or do you think some of them are taking it to far?
The sport doesn’t need 32 robots, snooker is a much duller place without the characters like Higgins, White and O’Sullivan etc, darts is no different and needs a few Jockys, Bristows etc.
Did you have plans to become a commentator on TV for darts?
Yes I made a conscious decision to get behind the scenes as much as possible and started doing the odd game back in the late 90’s for SKY, then did the first radio broadcast for the Irish masters which was covered by sky and talksport.
Is is frustrating commentating on tv & not playing at this level anymore, or is it a new chapter in your life?
No I absolutley love broadcasting, I have been lucky enough to work with so many broadcasters over the years and learn so much about the industry.
Do you think their should be more TV tournaments like the grand slam where the PDC & BDO go head to head?
No, I think the one is enough and that gives the BDO lads a taste of what is available if they choose a professional career. I am saddened that Lisa Ashton wasn’t given a spot though, I think Ladies darts deserves more credibility as they have made huge progress the last 10-15 years.
What is your favourite tournament of the year other than the worlds?
The World Matchplay, long course darts played in its purist form.
The growth of Darts has gone crazy in the last 10 years, how much more do you think it will grow in the next 10 years?
I think its pretty much peaked in terms of airtime but not in terms of its crossover potential.
What advice would you give to any youngsters wanting to start out in the game? ( my two like darts, this is their question )
Enjoy the game and listen look and learn.
Who do you think will win the Grand Slam of Darts this year?
MVG or Anderson for me but would love Phil Taylor to lift it one more time for posterity.
Hope you enjoyed the quetions and answers from this interview with Chris Mason, please leave any comments below and I will be sure to get back to you.
