Challenge Tour and Development Tour will hopefully return later this year, says PDC Chief Executive

PDC Chief Executive Matthew Porter has revealed hopes of including the Challenge Tour and Development Tour within a revised calendar in the coming weeks.

Similar to the returning professional circuit, both secondary tours have been suspended since March at the hands of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Challenge Tour and Development Tour have each held four tournaments thus far this year, with all scheduled events being placed on hold due to the current global situation.

Former BDO world champion Scott Mitchell currently leads the way in the Challenge Tour Order of Merit, while Ryan Meikle tops the Development Tour standings.

The winner of the 2020 Challenge Tour will earn their spot at the 2021 World Darts Championship, while the top two on the Development Tour Order of Merit will qualify for the sport’s showpiece.

The PDC, alongside the PDPA, are currently working towards a revised calendar for the remainder of this year – which is planned to include Challenge Tour and Development Tour weekends.

“We’d like to reassure all Challenge and Development Tour players that they certainly haven’t been forgotten about,” said PDC Chief Executive Matthew Porter.

“We very much hope to be able to continue those tours in some way this year to give players on those tours further opportunity to compete within a PDC environment.

“Much of the reality of that will depend on whether or not we would need to create ‘bubble’ environments as we are doing for the Summer Series, as they are very costly and place onerous requirements on players which may not be as practical when you are dealing with semi-professional players in many cases.

“Once we have clarity over the August events in respect of whether or not we can stage them as normal, we’ll make an announcement but in the meantime we would urge players to be aware of the financial risks of making travel plans without insurance or cancellation options.”
