Chengan Liu ends 14-year World Darts Championship absence after coming through Chinese Qualifier
Chengan Liu brought his 14-year World Darts Championship absence to an end on Saturday as he came through the Chinese Qualifier in Zhoushan.
Liu qualified for the 2006 edition of the World Championship, departing in the first round at the hands of three-time world champion John Part of Canada
The Chinese thrower became the second player from his country to appear at the Circus Tavern, and was whitewashed by the current Sky Sports commentator and pundit.
Liu has since reached the final of the Hong Kong Open, as well as making multiple appearances at the Shanghai Masters as part of the World Series of Darts circuit.
Hebei-based Liu will now make his debut at Alexandra Palace after travelling across China in order to compete in their national qualifier, and denying Qingyu Zhan in a closely contested final.
He recorded a respectable 87.82 average in his win over Zhan, following previous victories over Guang Yang, former World Cup of Darts participant Momo Zhou, Weihong Li and Zhiyun Fei.
Liu joins Boris Krcmar at Alexandra Palace following the Croatian’s success at the Eastern European Qualifier on Saturday, as well as the likes of Nico Kurz and Keane Barry.
Meanwhile, two-time World Championship qualifier Xiaochen Zong departed in the quarter-finals at the hands of the relatively unknown Zizhao Zheng.
Further international qualifiers are set to be confirmed over the next two weeks, with qualifying events to be held in both Russia and South Africa.
