Cristo Reyes set for return after twenty-month absence from professional darts

Former Austrian Darts Open semi-finalist Cristo Reyes will make an anticipated return to the sport this weekend when the Spaniard competes in the South West Europe qualifier for the 2022 World Darts Championship.

Reyes has withdrawn from every professional competition since the outbreak of coronavirus, aside from a brief appearance in the remotely-contested PDC Home Tour, but the Tenerife-based thrower has entered this weekend’s qualifying event.

Reyes bursted onto the scene after winning the same qualifier seven years ago, subsequently reaching the last 16 of the World Championship on debut and qualifying for the World Matchplay and the World Grand Prix during a successful period between 2016 and 2017.

The three-time ranking event semi-finalist has opted against travelling over the past 20 months due to a number of reasons, predominantly due to his father’s health and therefore the risks of catching Covid-19 as well as an arm injury.

Reyes joins fellow Spanish professional Jesus Noguera at Saturday’s qualifying event held in Avila, with other entrants including Toni Alcinas, Jose Justicia, Portugal’s Jose Marques and France’s Thibault Tricole.
