Jamie Caven opts out of PDC Qualifying School due to health concerns

Two-time UK Open semi-finalist Jamie Caven has opted out of the upcoming PDC Qualifying School due to health concerns, in relation to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Caven, a winner of six PDC ranking tournaments, spent seven years within the professional echelons of the sport before losing his tour card at the backend of 2018.

The 44-year-old from Derby has since then attended Qualifying School on two occasions in the hope of regaining his professional status, but fell short and instead competed on the PDC Challenge Tour.

‘Jabba’ was hoping to make a third consecutive appearance at the gruelling tournament, though, doctors have advised him to withdraw.

Caven released a statement via social media. “After speaking with my doctors, they have advised me to withdraw from Q School and I have decided to take their advice,” he explained.

“Although having diabetes does not mean I’m more likely to catch the virus, it does mean that if I was to catch Covid-19, it can cause more severe symptoms and complications so a full recovery may be less likely.

“Whilst the PDC are doing an excellent job providing us with chance to do these events with testing in place, I still feel uneasy at this time, having not had the vaccine yet and therefore I cannot be 100 percent focussed.

“Debbie [Jamie’s wife], as always my rock, gives her full support in this decision and my sponsors have been absolutely brilliant about this situation and give me their full support, I am so grateful.

“When the restrictions are lifted and I have had the vaccine – whenever that may be, I will be competing in non-PDC events as and when possible, and of course my diary will be completely available for exhibitions.

“Thanks to all and I endeavour to prepare for 2022 Q School over the next 12 months.”

A revamped and extended Qualifying School takes place from February 8-17 in Milton Keynes and Niedernhausen, Germany simultaneously.

Hundreds of players will flock inside each of the respective venues, with health and safety protocols in place and a mere 29 tour cards up for grabs.
