European Tour double-header in Sindelfingen and Riesa announced
The 2020 European Tour has been doubled to four events, with tournaments in Sindelfingen and Riesa to take place from 16-18 and 23-25 October respectively.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in Europe in late February, it always looked like a case of damage limitation for the European Tour, with those events among the first to fall foul of the virus.
Therefore, huge credit must go to PDC Europe for successfully organising this weekend’s German Darts Championship in Hildesheim as well as the newly-announced European Darts Grand Prix and International Darts Open.
All three events will take place with a limited crowd according to local and national guidelines.
The top 32 players on the European Tour Order of Merit after the year’s four events, including the Belgian Darts Championship in February, will participate in the European Championship.
The TV tournament is set to take place from 29 October to 1 November in Dortmund, and could see a few unexpected names in the field with such little opportunity to qualify.
Both of the newly-confirmed tournaments will include the same field of players who were due to take place in the corresponding events in the spring.
This will see seedings that look very different to the current ProTour Order of Merit, but is the only way around such an unprecedented situation.
The 24 Tour Card holders that qualified for each event will also take part, although Kyle Anderson has withdrawn from ET4 and both Simon Stevenson and Niels Zonneveld have withdrawn from ET2.
That means that Host Nation qualifiers, in both cases German qualifiers, will top up the field. Max Hopp and Gabriel Clemens will also take part in the upcoming three events due to their ProTour ranking.
