Former Footballer Registers For BDO Denmark Open
In a Darts story straight out of left field, former Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid midfielder, Rafael van der Vaart has entered the BDO Danish Open, which takes place on the weekend of May the 4th and 5th in Esbjerg, home of the last club that the Dutchman played for before being forced to retire with recurring injuries last year.
36 year old van der Vaart, who also has 109 caps for Holland during a distinguished international career, will line up against some of the best players the BDO has to offer, in a tournament that has seen multiple World Champion, John Lowe crowned winner a record five times, and has also seen big name winners in the past such as Phil Taylor (1990) Gary Anderson (2004) and countryman Raymond van Barneveld (1997).
The most recent winner of the event was another Dutchman, Willem Mandigers, who defeated Mark McGeeney 6-3 in the 2018 final.
van der Vaart is no stranger to the game, having been seen at Alexandra Palace taking in the PDC World Championships as a spectator during his Tottenham days. He is also friends with several of the top Dutch players, and has taken part in several exhibitions with the likes of van Barneveld and Michael van Gerwen.
A lot of eyes will be following his progress with keen interest. He will also be joined in the competition by his brother, Fernando.
