German Darts Masters, Day One – MVG & Anderson Stunned, Barney Makes Early Exit

There were shocks aplenty on day one of the German Darts Masters in Cologne.

Michael Van Gerwen squandered a 5-1 lead, as Martin Schindler came from nowhere to clinch a 6-5 win and delight his home fans.

MVG missed three darts for the match, and the German timed his run to perfection, to close out a famous deciding leg win. He opened with a 140 and a 180 in the final leg, but missed a dart at tops and double ten, to finally cross the line on double seven.

Next up for “The Wall” will be Mensur Suljovic, and the defending champion made serene progress with a 6-2 win against Mark Langendorf.

Gary Anderson was also upset, as 22 year old home favourite, Nico Kurz caused a seismic shock, dumping the two time World Champion out at the first hurdle with a stunning 6-4 win.

Kurz, who was making only his second televised appearance following a last leg defeat to Jamie Lewis in last years event, and he showed no sign of nerves, nailing a 170 checkout to go 3-2 up. Anderson stayed in touch with 138 and 79 checkouts of his own, but the German wouldn’t be denied, and closed out the match with a sixteen darter on double eight at the first time of asking, finishing with a 95.03 average.

He will now meet Peter Wright in the quarter finals, after the Scot had to work hard for a 6-4 win against Robert Marijanovic, after being clawed back from a 5-1 lead.

It was misery again on the latest leg of the Raymond van Barneveld farewell tour, as he slipped to a 6-3 defeat to emerging German talent, Gabriel Clemens. A 90.39 average was never going to be enough against the ever improving Clemens, who had 60% success on his doubles.

Clemens’ reward for his win is a quarter final meeting with Rob Cross, who didn’t miss a dart at a double in a 6-4 win over Max Hopp.

Daryl Gurney will meet James Wade in the last eight, after both eased to 6-2 wins. Gurney saw off Christian Bunse, while Wade dealt with the challenge of Kevin Munch.
