Hughes and Ward earn Tour Cards on Day One
Jamie Hughes and Harry Ward both earned their two-year PDC Tour Cards on Thursday after coming through a field of 384 at the Robin Park Leisure Centre in Wigan and winning their cards for the first time.
Hughes, who attempted Q School last year for the first time and was unsuccessful, came into Q School this year on the back of a successful year on the Challenge Tour picking a title along the way. He smashed his way through the field in Wigan, winning 8 matches by defeating Jamie Barrowman, Sean Bell, John Bryan, Scott Dale, Callan Rydz, Kevin Thomas, Dafydd Edwards and Kirk Shepherd in the penultimate match. At one point, he went three straight matches averaging 109.8, 109.3 and 108.5 respectively!
Ward, who has competed on the Development Tour and Challenge Tour over the last couple of years, stormed his way through the field defeating Brian Doran, Ricky King, Dyson Parody, Jim Williams, James Kempster, Richie Howson and Mark McGeeney in the Penultimate match with a 103 average!
Semi Final runs for Kirk Shepherd, aiming to win his tour card back having had it for the previous two years and Mark McGeeney, competing at Q School for the first time having come over from the BDO.
Early Exits for the likes of Three-time and reigning BDO World Champion Glen Durrant, Another former Three-time World Champion in John Part, former Grand of Darts Winner Scott Waites and former Premier League Star Wes Newton.
First Round exits for Jamie Caven, Kevin Painter, Andrew Gilding and Andy Hamilton. Seven high profile ladies competed in the event where Lorraine Winstanley went the furthest reaching the Last 64 and Lisa Ashton, Deta Hedman and Anastasia Dobromyslova all winning their first matches and then all losing their second matches of the day.
