Modus Champions Series: Adams denies old foe Taylor to reign victorious in second staging

Martin Adams rolled back the years with a scintillating string of showings to claim the second Modus Champions Series title, denying his old foe Phil Taylor along the way.

Taylor, who was making yet another online appearance on the same day that he converted two nine-darters in the Premier League a decade ago, reigned victorious in the inaugural Champions Series a fortnight ago.

‘The Power’ recorded a breathtaking 110.86 average whilst overcoming Adams on that occasion, as well as averaging just spare of the 100 mark in victories over female stars Fallon Sherrock and Anastasia Dobromyslova.

Sherrock and Adams returned alongside the 16-time champion of the world for the Champions Series’ second staging, with three-time women’s world champion Dobromyslova being replaced by Arron Monk.

Monk, who nailed the first Modus Icons of Darts Live League nine-darter last month, commenced his campaign unsuccessfully against a rampant Adams – who pinned checkouts of 115 and 116 in a comfortable 5-1 victory.

The three-time world champion registered a 97.80 average and executed five out of his eight attempts on the outer ring to get off to a winning start, before enduring defeat at the hands of global sensation Sherrock.

Adams battled back from 3-0 down against the former BDO World Trophy champion, only for Sherrock to convert an impressive 130 checkout on the bullseye to wrap up her first and only win on Sunday afternoon.

‘Wolfie’ then locked horns with Taylor – who had beforehand survived multiple match darts at the hands of former world youth champion Arron Monk.

It was an affair of opposing standard to their clash a fortnight ago as both averaged below the 85 mark, compared to the monstrous numbers compiled previously.

Adams constructed an early 3-0 advantage courtesy of 58, 86 and 102 combination checkouts, and, despite Taylor winning successive legs and teasing a comeback, remained in pole position throughout.

Taylor finished second best on the day with victories over Monk and Sherrock. His tussle with Monk saw banter being thrown up and down the country as well as exhibition shots aplenty.

After squandering multiple match darts against the legendary 59-year-old, Monk endured that he wouldn’t end the afternoon with three consecutive defeats as he ousted a below-par Sherrock, averaging over the 90 mark.

Despite upping her standards significantly, Sherrock was subsequently handed a second successive loss in the culminating collision of Sunday afternoon.

She averaged 92.51 and pinned checkouts of 72, 78 and 116, however, it was far from enough to overcome an impressive Taylor – who averaged just spare of the 100 mark, and extended his winning streak against the 25-year-old.

Table-topper Adams will immediately return to competitive action on Monday afternoon as the Modus Icons of Darts Live League resumes.
