New innovative PDC format ends with Devon Petersen as the winner
Devon Petersen edged out Chris Dobey by one leg to become the inaugural PDC Darts at Home Champion after the exciting new format of darts was announced by the PDC.
Many have been calling for something like this to happen to provide us with some much-needed entertainment, and the PDC answered those calls on Wednesday with five Tour Card holders selected to take to their own practice oches and virtually play each other.
Streamed on the PDC’s Facebook and YouTube channels, it drew in plenty of attention and the action kicked off with Petersen against Dobey. The South African started the better, taking the first two legs, before Dobey replied only for ‘The African Warrior’ to capitalise on missed doubles and take the short race 4-1.
However, ‘Hollywood’ got his first win immediately afterwards with a 4-2 win over Luke Humphries, averaging 88. Ted Evetts and Matthew Edgar entered the fray next, and the Development Tour’s most successful player got off to a flyer with an 11-darter.
YouTube sensation Edgar was able to get a couple of legs but couldn’t stop Evetts’ 95 average on his way to a 4-2 win. The short format allowed for some high averages, and Humphries certainly produced that in the night’s fourth match.
A 12-darter and an 11-darter helped him to a 3-0 lead over Petersen, and despite a brief comeback, ‘Cool Hand’ went seven darts into the perfect leg and finished it off in 10 to seal a 4-2 win with an average of 109.
Recent ProTour semi-finalist Petersen got his second win of the evening in the next game, winning a scrappy affair with Evetts 4-2.
He made it three soon after despite a similarly below-par performance against Edgar, although he did finish with a flourish in the form of an 11-darter for another 4-2 success.
The only 4-3 scoreline of the evening came in the next match as Evetts came from 3-1 down to beat Humphries 4-3.
Dobey returned to the action in style with two 12-darters helping him to a 4-2 win over Evetts with a 102 average.
The penultimate match of the evening saw another win for Dobey, coming from behind to beat Edgar 4-2. However, he needed a 4-1 win to go level with Petersen on legs difference so that meant ‘The African Warrior’ was crowned champion.
Only pride was at stake in the last match, but Newbury’s Humphries didn’t seem to mind as he posted another ton-plus average, this time a 104 in a 4-1 win over Edgar.
