No Barney In Blackpool

This years Betfred World Matchplay will not feature Raymond van Barneveld, after the five time World Champion withdrew from this weekend’s Tour events due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

There was only a slim chance “Barney” would have made the showpiece event at The Winter Gardens, but it is disappointing nonetheless that he wont be at the event that he has been an ever present in since 2007.

This is of course, the big Dutchman’s swansong year, and he is rapidly losing televised tournament places by the month due to defending so much Order of Merit money, and poor performances over the last two years.

The World Matchplay hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for van Barneveld, with a runner up spot in 2010 in a loss to Phil Taylor his pinnacle in the tournament. He is best remembered in the event for a stunning nine darter against Denis Ovens in the same year.

The Betfred World Matchplay runs from July 20-28.
