Noppert seals maiden PDC title in Dublin

Former Lakeside Danny Noppert sealed his maiden PDC title at Dublin’s CityWest Hotel with a 6-4 win over Ian White.

Noppert, who made the move across codes following his below-par performance in January’s BDO World Championship, came out on top of a 128-man field including the likes of Michael van Gerwen and Rob Cross, one of which be defeated en route to trousering £10,000 on the Emerald Isle.

The Dutchman began his march to victory with a 6-3 win over Gary Eastwood, before dispatching former World Championship finalist Mark Dudbridge 6-2 and Davy van Baelen 6-3.

He then averaged over the 100 mark in a 6-4 win over ‘Rapid’ Ricky Evans, prior to a 6-3 win over Chris Quantock and a 6-3 win over Rob Cross to book his place in his maiden final on the PDC scene.

Noppert raced out of the gates in the final and opened up an early 2-0 lead. Stoke-based Ian White pulled one leg back, only for his Dutch opponent to win the next two and gain a 4-1 advantage.

White then came out on top of three of the next four legs to move within one of the current Finder Darts Master, but that wasn’t enough as Noppert closed out the match with a 75 checkout in two darts. The Joure-based ace was clinical on the outer ring to say at the least throughout the duration of the day in Dublin.

It was yet another terrific day for Ian White as he backed up his two Players Championship titles and his recent Dutch Darts Championship crown with a final appearance, despite loosing out to Noppert. White enjoyed wins over Jimmy Hendriks, Nathan Aspinall, Kyle Anderson, Ron Meulenkamp, Mensur Suljovic and Keegan Brown in a rampant run to the final.

Elsewhere, Martin Schindler beat Michael van Gerwen in the opening round as he edged out the Dutchman in a last leg decider. It was the first time van Gerwen endured defeat in the first round of a Players Championship event for three years.

Bristol’s former World Championship finalist Mark Dudbridge ended a 14-match losing streak in Players Championship events, dating back to March, after he defeated Joe Murnan.

Peter Wright suffered a second round exit at the hands of Wales’ Robert Owen while Daryl Gurney also was sent packing at the second round stage and former Champions League of Darts winner Mensur Suljovic was beaten in the quarter-finals by eventual finalist Ian White.

Just two weekends of ProTour action remain this season with the final weekend of Players Championship action and the European Darts Trophy taking place next month.
