PDC 2019 Calendar: Prague added to European Tour schedule while Amsterdam set to host World Series Finals

2019 will see the worldwide growth of Darts continue to expand as over 200 playing days will go ahead and new cities will experience the shenanigans of hosting a PDC affiliated event.

Following the William Hill World Darts Championship final on New Years Day, the attention will move on to the European Qualifying School in Hildesheim – which will be surprisingly held during the BDO World Championships and two weeks before the UK edition of Qualifying School.

The 2019 Premier League will once again see ten stars travel around England and some stagings in Mainland Europe but there will now be 17 nights with another double-header following this year’s events following Exeter’s event being postponed due to atrocious weather conditions.

In amongst the prolonged Premier League, the alternated UK Open will once again take place at Butlins Resort in Minehead. Following the dismissal of the UK Open Qualification series of events, the field was expanded with all 128 tour card holders being joined on the Somerset coast by 16 Challenge Tour throwers and 16 amateur qualifiers.

Gary Anderson will be defending his title at March’s event with the tournament keeping its rookie nature, and the likes of Paul Hogan and Alex Roy still be able to enter the event as amateur players.

The 2019 season will also see the World Cup of Darts remain in the June calendar while the hugely popular World Matchplay will head to the Winter Gardens once again in July.

The World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts and Players Championship Finals will remain at their traditional venues while the European Championship will be relocated from Dortmund to Gottingen, though, it will keep its place in Germany.

The World Series Finals will be relocated for a successive season as it moves from Mensur Suljovic‘s home town of Vienna to Amsterdam as the Netherlands finally gains a televised event. The World Series Finals is also an event that Michael van Gerwen is on a winning roll in after winning the event four years on the spin going into November’s event. Could he possibly make it six consecutive titles when the tournament takes place in Amsterdam in 14 months time.

The ProTour sees 30 Players Championship events take place throughout the duration of the year, including four midweek double-headers and two events held in Hildesheim – which now seems to be the German capital of darts with the European Qualifying School, Development Tour events and a European Tour event all taking place at Halle 39.

The European Tour will experience no extra events next year with 13 events still taking place, though, we will see Prague host its maiden PDC affiliated tournament following the introduction of the Danish Darts Masters earlier this year – which was a huge success in the heart of Copenhagen.

The announcement of the event that will be held in Prague next year, came just days after Karel Sedlacek became the first ever Czech Republic representative on the European Tour after he qualified for the Dutch Darts Masters in Maastricht. Sedlacek,  who has appeared on the World Cup of Darts on multiple occasions, was dumped out in the opening round by William O’Connor who managed to dethrone the reigning champion Michael van Gerwen in the second round.

Both the Challenge Tour and Development Tour will stick to their round number of 20 events throughout the year while it is assumed that the PDC Asian Tour and PDC Nordic and Baltic series of events will continue after a successful year thus far this campaign.

As well as the Development Tour, another juvenile event will proceed to go ahead once again in 2019 in the World Youth Championships, with the final once again being held at the home of world darts – Butlins, Minehead.

Hearn has managed to turn darts into a global sport with added World Series events being confirmed in the coming weeks

PDC chairman Barry Hearn had a lot to say following the announcement: “Our recent announcement of the expansion of the UK Open has allowed us to increase the number of Players Championship events being held during the year and create further opportunities for professional players.

“In addition, the European Tour remains consistent with 13 events but visits the Czech Republic for the first time to continue its growth across the continent.

“With Amsterdam staging a TV event for the first time when it hosts the World Series of Darts Finals and a Premier League double-header in Rotterdam, the popularity of the sport in the Netherlands is also reflected in next year’s schedule.

“These continue to be hugely exciting times for anyone with the ambition to get to the top of the sport, and I’m sure that there will be massive interest for Qualifying School in the UK and Germany in January and also on our Development and Challenge Tour circuits.”
