Portela and Gilitwala receive World Darts Championship invitations

Brazilian Diogo Portela will make his World Darts Championship return next month, while Amit Gilitwala is preparing for his debut at the tournament.

The usual qualifying events in Brazil and India were unable to take place, with Portela and Gilitwala receiving invitations to the sport’s flagship staging.

As the only South American competing on the professional circuit, Portela received their position, while Gilitwala was handed the Indian place as the Indian Darts Federation number one.

Portela will make his fourth consecutive World Championship appearance after suffering first round exits in previous years against Peter Wright, Ron Meulenkamp and Josh Payne.

Meanwhile, Finland’s Kim Viljanen has withdrawn from the tournament due to health reasons, and will be replaced by the next player from the PDC Nordic and Baltic rankings in Marko Kantele.

The final World Championship field will be confirmed on Monday following the PDC Tour Card Holders’ Qualifier at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

Six spots will now be up for grabs, differing from the usual two, due to various qualifying events across Europe being unable to go ahead due to the global pandemic.

Four places will be on offer for UK and Ireland based players, while two spots will go to players residing from the rest of the world.
