Premier Inn League: Dawson defeats Murphy in closely contested commentators clash
Dan Dawson defeated his fellow PDC commentator Chris Murphy in a closely contested 2020 Premier Inn League opener.
The pair conventionally provide expert analysis on ProTour weekends from Wigan and Barnsley or European Tour events across the continent, though, regularly take to oche themselves throughout the year.
It was shown live on DartConnect on Thursday evening in order to supply darts spectators with some entertainment left behind by the Unibet Premier League – which was postponed courtesy of coronavirus concerns.
It was the first remotely contested battle between the two – who usually lock horns in person whilst on their commentary travels, hence the branding of the tournament.
Murphy lifted the Nitin Kumar Cup last year with a Finals Night victory at Alexandra Palace during the World Darts Championship, despite Dawson being triumphant in the vast majority of their clashes held throughout the year.
It was far from the quality that the duo are used to watching on a regular basis, with 40 averages being registered apiece and a 27-darter being the best leg of the match.
Dawson opened up an early 2-1 lead, though, a mid-match rampage from Murphy saw him reel off three legs in succession and gain the advantage.
Birmingham’s Dawson then found back-to-back legs, including the best of the meeting, only for Murphy to regain the upper hand once again and move on the brink of victory courtesy of a scintillating 88 outshot.
The Yorkshire-based ace then surrendered his narrow lead, with Dawson pinning back-to-back 20 checkouts to reign triumphant.
Dawson and Murphy will lock horns afresh next Thursday amid an emptied darting calendar due to coronavirus concerns.
