Remote Darts League: Hogan continues unbeaten run with three wins from three on Night Nine
Paul Hogan continued his unbeaten streak in the second staging of the Remote Darts League as he ousted Australia’s Justin Thompson and American duo Stacey Pace and Larry Butler.
Hogan’s winning run was scuppered by the reigning World Masters champion, John O’Shea, on Saturday evening, but he remains undefeated with his last loss coming in the RDL1 final against James Richardson.
Both ‘Crocodile Dundee’ and Richardson have formed an online rivalry as part of the Remote Darts League, exchanging messages on social media and consistently overtaking one other at the top of the table.
Following ‘Ruthless’ Richardson’s dominance on Monday evening, Hogan was vying to catch his arch-rival, opening Tuesday’s action with a 6-3 victory over BDO World Championship qualifier Justin Thompson.
Hogan raced out of the gates and constructed an early 2-0 advantage, though, Thompson battled back. The Australian punished squandered attempts on the outer ring from his opponent, landing double eight to level up proceedings at two-a-piece.
Both players proceeded to hold throw, but the Newcastle Classic champion’s hope were soon derailed as Hogan reeled off three legs in succession to clinch another two points.
Hogan then whitewashed a struggling Stacey Pace despite missing 13 darts at double, before completing an impressive hat-trick of victories against the legendary Larry Butler.
The Basingstoke-based thrower dissipated doubles aplenty once again whilst locking horns with the 1994 World Matchplay champion, but breezed to a 6-2 victory despite averaging a mere 78.91.
Hogan pinned a stunning 121 checkout on the bullseye with Butler sat on a double to extend his lead to three legs at 4-1, and from there the American’s hopes decimated.
Elsewhere, both Thompson and Butler now sit comfortably in the table’s top four, having played three matches more than those situated below them.
Thompson defied three maximums and 101 outshot from Butler in the pair’s meeting, with the Australian clocking a 60 per cent conversion rate on the outer ring.
Port City Open champion Pace was thrashed to nil by both Thompson and her compatriot Butler, and remains rock bottom in the table.
The Remote Darts League resumes on Wednesday evening as Tony O’Shea, Tina Osbourne and North American duo David Cameron and Joe Chaney return.
