The Race to Dortmund is hotting up!

After last night’s shenanigans, the race to  Dortmund is hotting up. Who will secure their place at the European Championships?

Currently, 27 throwers have confirmed their place in Dortmund while another five anxiously await the conclusion of this weekend’s European Tour finale in Gottingen.

Martin Schindler and Steve Beaton clinched their spots yesterday evening following first round victories over Luke Woodhouse and Kim Huybretchs. Beaton’s win over Huybretchs was very significant as we will not see the Belgian at the European Championships for the first time in seven years.

Darius Labanauskas, who would have become the first Lithuanian to appear at the European Championships, and Andy Boulton, will not be at the tournament after failing to qualify for the European Darts Trophy and therefore dropping out of the 32-man field.

Kyle Anderson, Cristo Reyes and Jelle Klaasen will be at the European Championships unless a host of upsets take place over the remainder of the weekend.

However, Jan Dekker will be very apprehensive over the next few days due to him being on the verge of dropping out of the provisional field. If either Luke Humphries, Krzysztof Ratajski or Vincent van der Voort win in today’s second round, the Dutchman will not be heading to Dortmund in November.

Paul Nicholson, though, will also be on the edge of his seat throughout the duration of the weekend, as, if Luke Humphries reaches the third round and one of Vincent van der Voort, Krzysztof Ratajski and Richard North reach the last eight in Gottingen, he could also find himself drop out of the provisional lineup.

There are 12 players who can potentially knock the five players in sit in the remaining positions out of their qualification spots and they are: Luke Humphries, Vincent van der Voort and Krzysztof Ratajski (if they reach the third round), Richard North and Ryan Joyce (if they reach the quarter-finals), Toni Alcinas and John Henderson (if they reach the semi-finals), Gabriel Clemens, Mickey Mansell, Jeffrey de Zwaan and Marko Kantele (if they reach the final), and Matt Edgar if he was to go on and win his first PDC title.

It will be an interesting couple of days over in Gottingen and everyone is praying that Paul Nicholson manages to keep his spot at the European Championships. If he did manage it, it would be his first appearance on television for three years other than his brief appearance in November’s Players Championship Finals – where he was dispatched by Michael van Gerwen.
