Unibet Premier League – Week 14 Preview & Predictions

We are three weeks away from the Play Offs in the 2019 Unibet Premier League, and we are still no nearer to knowing the identity of the competitors at the O2 Arena, London.

The Manchester Arena is the next venue on the greatest roadshow on Planet Darts, where some crucial ties take place.

Unibet Premier League table (PDC)

Rob Cross (2nd) v Michael Smith (7th)

Two men that have met quite a bit in 2019 already, meet again in match one of the night. Michael Smith is all but eliminated, while Rob Cross still has designs on finishing top of the pile.

Premier League Week 13

Cross wasn’t at his best, but still managed to claw his way to a draw with a visibly disappointed Gerwyn Price in Birmingham last week.

Smith came out of the blocks flying at Arena Birmingham, leading Mensur Suljovic 6-2, before collapsing and eventually scrambling for a 7-7 draw.

German Open

The Euro Tour hit Saarbrucken in Germany last weekend, and Cross turned in another solid display to reach the semi-finals. Ian White eventually ended his run, winning 7-5.

Smith decided to give the tournament a miss.

Players Championship Events 13&14

Cross again swerved the Players Championship events this week, focusing on his play off push instead.

Smith had back to back last 32 exits in Barnsley, exiting against Cristo Reyes in PC13, and to eventual winner. Jeffrey de Zwaan the following day.

Prediction: Smith doesn’t tend to fare too well against Cross, and he has gone missing in the key moments of matches this season. An 8-5 Cross win for me.

Peter Wright (8th) v Mensur Suljovic (5th)

Two friends with differing agendas form the second match of the evening, as an a near enough eliminated Peter Wright clashes with Mensur Suljovic, who is firmly in the mix to make London.

Premier League Week 13

Wright started brightly against Daryl Gurney, but faded in the latter half of the contest, and slipped to an 8-4 defeat.

Suljovic roared back from 6-2 down to lead Michael Smith 7-6, before settling for a point.

German Open

Wright beat Steve Lennon 6-2 in Germany, before Dave Chisnall sent him packing 6-1 in the last 16.

The Austrian was also eliminated by “Chizzy” one round later, by a 6-5 scoreline.

Players Championship Events 13&14

Wright reached the quarter finals of PC13, where Adrian Lewis edged him out 6-5. PC14 should have seen him at least match this. After routing the returning Gary Anderson 6-0 with over a 114 average, he slipped to a shock defeat to Harry Ward, squandering a 4-0 lead to lose 6-5.

Mensur only took part in PC14, where Brendan Dolan knocked him out 6-2 in the last 32.

Prediction: I think this one could go all the way, with Wright nicking a point in a 7-7 draw.

Daryl Gurney (6th) v Michael van Gerwen (1st)

It’s a must win match for Daryl Gurney in the North West, as he must repeat his earlier in the season victory over Michael van Gerwen to realistically stay in the hunt for London. He sits one point outside the play offs, but with third meeting fourth this week, there could be more distance between he and the top four come the end of the night if Gurney is defeated.

MVG is coming into form just at the right time, and is fresh off yet another Title last weekend.

Premier League Week 13

Gurney was the only winner in the Midlands last week, turning in a solid display, and a near 100 average to ease past Peter Wright 8-4.

van Gerwen and James Wade matched each other blow for blow in a high class 7-7 draw in Birmingham. A 106+ average, and 70% on the doubles was only enough for a share of the spoils for the Dutchman

German Open

It was Euro Tour action in Saarbrucken last weekend, and the German Open, and Gurney was eliminated at the last 16 stage in a 6-3 defeat to Mensur Suljovic.

It was business as usual for van Gerwen in Germany, as he lifted yet another trophy to add to his collection. An 8-3 win against Ian White in the final saw him trouser £25,000 and the winners’ trophy.

Players Championship Events 13&14

Gurney enjoyed a solid run to the semi-finals at PC13, in a rare midweek Players Championship double header. Eventual, and surprise winner, William O’Connor, ousted him in the last four. The Irishman then swerved PC14 in roder to prepare for his Premier League match this week

van Gerwen again opted to miss the events in Yorkshire.

Prediction: van Gerwen is coming into optimum form just at the right time, and I cant see Gurney getting the better of him this time. 8-3  to MVG is my pick.

James Wade (3rd) v Gerwyn Price (4th)

The crunch clash comes in the final match of the evening. Just leg difference separates James Wade and Gerwyn Price, and if a winner can be found in this game, they will take a massive step towards qualification.

Premier League Week 13

Wade continued his strong start to 2019, and again showed no fear or respect for Michael van Gerwen in Birmingham. Wade beat MVG 7-3 in Exeter earlier in the season, and was 7-5 up here, eventually the match finished in a quality draw.

Price will rue letting a lead slip against Rob Cross, missing match darts, and allowing the Hastings man to take a point.

German Open

Wade was soundly beaten 6-2 in the last 16 in Germany to UK Open Champion, Nathan Aspinall.

Price went one round further, but recent nemesis, Rob Cross, edged a 6-5 thriller.

Players Championship Events 13&14

Wade opted to rest rather than take on the midweek Pro Tour double header.

Luke Woodhouse took Price’s scalp 6-3 at PC13, while Krzysztof Ratajski was Price’s conqueror in the last 16 of PC14.

Prediction: Wade is red hot at the minute, and Price has missed doubles at crucial moments recently. I favour Wade to prevail 8-5.
