Van Gerwen Thrashes Van Barnevled On An Emotional Night In Rotterdam! – Report!
On a night where Raymond van Barneveld has announced his retirement from Darts, The Premier League double header in Rotterdam came to a close tonight as we seen Raymond van Barneveld bow out of the Premier League against his Dutch compatriot Michael van Gerwen where he was destroyed 7-1 in which was yet another disappointing performance from the 2014 Premier League champion. He averaged 84.68 against van Gerwen who averaged 101.39. van Gerwen blew the 5 time World Champion away as he rallied in 4 maximums on his way to a 7-1 victory. Van Gerwen raced into a 4-0 lead and there was worrying signs it could be the worse for Barney, a whitewash, van Gerwen produced back to back 13 dart legs to win the opening two legs, he won the worst leg of darts in the game as a 21 darter was enough to salvage a 3-0 lead, and then he rattled in a 16 darter to help his cause to a 4-0 lead. Barney finally won his first legs of the match as he had a fantastic 13 darter and which was his only leg he won. Van Gerwen got the job done with ease as brilliant legs of 14, 14 and 15 got him over the line and to defeat his good friend and a legend of the game.
The game of the night was no doubt the last game of the night where James Wade defeated Michael Smith 7-4 in an all Unicorn clash. Wade had an impressive 102.44 average compared to Smith’s 99.39. In the first leg, ‘Bullyboy’ came off the blocks early on in rapid style, missing double 12 for a 9 darter but had to settle for an 11 darter. Wade responded immediately as he rallied in a 12 darter of his own to level it up at 1-1. Smith had legs of 13 and 14 to race into a 3-1 lead. Wade yet again responded and not only that he won three consecutive legs on the spin to lead 4-3 with legs of 14, 14 and 15 and a 100 checkout to help his cause. Smith produced a 17 darter of his own to level the match up at 4-4. Wade for the second time in the match, won three legs on the spin to seal the victory as brilliance legs of 13, 14 and 15 got him over the line to win 7-4 and to pick up 2 important points.
Daryl Gurney made it three wins out of three and continued his great form as he defeated Mensur Suljovic 7-3 in what was a comfortable win for ‘Super Chin’. Gurney averaged 98.28 and hit five maximums on his way to his third consecutive victory in the Premier League. Daryl started off with a sluggish 19 darter to won the first leg, but he had a exceptional 14 darter to lead 2-0. Suljovic fought back well as he rallied in back to back 14 darters of his own to level the match at 2-2. Gurney then won three legs on the trot to lead 5-2 and to go one leg away from clinching a point thanks to legs of 13 and 18. Mensur made it 5-3 with a steady 18 darter but Gurney’s great legs of 14 and 15 got him over the line to win 7-3.
Rob Cross denied home favourite and young star Jeffrey De Zwaan a dream Premier League win as ‘Voltage’ seen off the Dutch youngster 7-4 and fought back well from going 3-1 down, he averaged 94.46 and hit a ridiculous number of 8 180’s on his way to victory. De Zwaan came out of the blocks firing right away as he won the first leg with a 12 darter in what was a dream start from the youngster from Netherlands. He then continued to deliver he took out a sublime 151 checkout for an 18 darter to lead 2-0. Cross got his first leg on the board courtesy of a 14 darter. De Zwaan had another superb 12 darter he raced into a 3-1 lead. Cross responded immediately as from 3-1 down he made it 3-3 with 17 and 18 dart legs. He then made it five legs on the spin to lead 6-3 thanks to legs of 12, 16 and 18 to earn at least a point. De Zwaan responded with a 14 darter but didn’t trouble Cross in the last leg as a 17 darter was enough for Cross to get over the line.
Gerwyn Price finally got his third win in the Premier League this year as he seen off Peter Wright 7-5 with a 94.47 average and firing in four maximums. Price started off brilliantly he took out a brilliant 147 checkout for a 15 darter to lead 1-0. Price won the next leg in what a poor leg of darts, a 23 darter was enough to lead 2-0. Wright finally settled into the match as from 2-0 down he led 3-2 with classy legs of 14 and two 15 darters. Price then went 7 perfect darts into the 9 darter but had to settle for an 11 darter to make it 3-3. Wright led again thanks to a 17 darter to lad 4-3. Price responded again with a 15 darter to level it up at 4-4. Wright was solid once again as a steady 18 darter helped him to a 5-4 lead, but the ‘Iceman’ rallied in three legs on the spin as legs of 11, 16 and 17 got him over the line to win 7-5.
