Van Gerwen Victorious at PC3 in Wigan

Michael Van Gerwen claimed his second ProTour title of 2019 defeating Ian White 8-5 in Saturday’s Players Championship 3 at Wigan’s Robin Park Leisure Centre.

The World Champion, who was victories in last Saturday’s Players Championship One, came into the tournament after a 7-3 over Mensur Suljovic in Glasgow on Thursday. He started off the day with a 6-3 win over Ryan Searle with a 95 average before a 6-4 win over Ross Smith with just a 90 average before taking on Jamie Hughes in the Last 32 and finishing the match with yet another perfect leg, having hit one last weekend, and finished the match with a 102.5 average. In the last 16, he defeated reigning 2-time World Youth Champion Dimitri Van den Bergh, with the pair averaging over 103 and the Dutchman coming out a 6-3 winner! In the Quarter Finals and Semi Finals, he defeated Gavin Carlin and Mervyn King both quite comfortably but only with averages of 91.4 and 91.8. In the Final, he took on the Diamond Ian White who is one of the toughest players to face on the PDC circuit. MVG won the opening couple of legs before White hit back to back 15 darters to make it 2 apiece. MVG took out a 160 checkout to make it 3-2 moving holding throw with a 13-dart leg. White then hit a 14 darter to make it 4-3 and from then on, the Green-Machine was in complete control winning 3 straight legs in 42 darts which included 2 180’s and checkouts of 160 and 170. White then hit back to back ton plus checkouts to make it 7-5 before missing 2 darts to move within one from the World Number one and MVG did what he does best, finishing on Double one to take yet another ProTour title.

White, who reached his first final of the year after a very successful 2018 ProTour Season, moved his way through to the final starting off with a 6-1 win over Vincent Kamphuis with an average of 103.6 then wins over Mark Webster, Ryan Joyce and Darren Webster to move through to the Quarter Finals. At that stage, he took on John Henderson who reached the Quarter Finals also at last Sunday’s Players Championship Event. White came through that one 6-4 with a 99 average. In the semi-finals, he took on Premier League Contender and stable mate Chris Dobey and didn’t find it easy winning 8-5 averaging 100 despite Dobey averaging higher at 103.9. Unable to win the final but that won’t be the last that we’ll see the Diamond in the decider of tournaments this year.

There were Quarter Finals runs for World Number three Peter Wright, 2018 UK Open and European Championship Quarter Finalist Steve West who joined Henderson and Carlin to reach that stage. There was Last 32 exits for the likes of Rob Cross, Mensur Suljovic, Gerwyn Price, Adrian Lewis and Jeffrey De Zwaan. Early exits for Michael Smith, Daryl Gurney and Players Championship Two winner Dave Chisnall also for a third straight ProTour Event, Simon Whitlock was dumped out in Round One along with James Wade.
