Webster denies Askew hat-trick to seal second Modus Icons of Darts crown with invincible Day Six campaign

Former world champion Mark Webster sealed his second Modus Icons of Darts Live League title as Phase Three of the initiative resumed on Saturday afternoon.

Webster declined the opportunity of regaining his professional status at PDC Qualifying School in January in order to pursue a break from the sport and focus on his media commitments.

Nevertheless, Webster received an invitation from his management team to compete in their live-streamed innovation, and, despite being slow to adapt to online darts, claimed his first title last Thursday.

He doubled his honours tally on Saturday afternoon, claiming a full house of victories and producing a scintillating string of showings throughout the duration of the day.

The 2008 BDO world champion commenced his campaign with back-to-back 5-4 victories over Russian number one Boris Koltsov and Devon youngster Keelan Kay despite missing handfuls of doubles.

After battling back from 3-1 behind against both Koltsov and Kay, Webster came through a closely contested affair with former World Championship semi-finalist Andy Jenkins.

‘The Spider’ then continued to climb up the table as he brought to an end title contender Scott Mitchell’s hopes with a 95.80 average and three maximums.

Webster would then face two-time Phase Three winner Jason Askew, with the latter in search of a hat-trick after triumphing on both Tuesday and Thursday.

Askew constructed an early 2-0 advantage, though, Webster fought back with a 127 checkout and legs of 14 and 15 darts to level up proceedings at two apiece.

The subsequent four legs went with throw to force a deciding leg, in which Webster pinned tops to get over the line, with only two big trebles in the all-important leg costing Askew a third consecutive crown.

The Modus Icons of Darts Live League resumes on Monday morning as Week Two of Phase Three commences, with the line-up being announced in due course.
