Welsh First Minister congratulates Gerwyn Price on World Championship triumph

Mark Drakeford, the First Minister of Wales, has congratulated newly-crowned world champion Gerwyn Price on his triumphant campaign at Alexandra Palace.

Welshman Price was crowned world champion after overcoming Gary Anderson in a relatively one-sided final, becoming world number one in doing so.

The 35-year-old from Markham became the first Welsh thrower to achieve both feats within the PDC structure, and his success has led to a number of congratulatory messages across his homeland.

Price received a personally signed letter from Welsh First Minister Drakeford – who provided his gratitude towards his compatriot and commended him on his success.

“Please accept my congratulations on winning the 2021 World Darts Championship and becoming world number one in the process,” Drakeford wrote.

“To be the first Welshman to become the PDC world champion is a remarkable achievement and richly deserved, reflecting your talent, hard work and dedication to the sport.

“I am sure you and your family are enormously proud, as are the people of Wales. My sincere best wishes for the future.”

Meanwhile, Chris Evans, the local MP for the Islwyn constituency, praised Price for his stunning scalp and invited him for dinner at the House of Commons.

Cycling’s Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas also congratulated his fellow Welshman on emulating him in lifting the most prestigious honour in their chosen sports.
