WSOD Finals: Price Ousts Smith To Book MVG Meeting
Day one at the Jack’s Casino World Series of Darts Finals at the AFAS Live in Amsterdam, determined which players will play seeded players in Saturday night’s second round.
Highlight of Friday night’s offerings saw Gerwyn Price defeat Michael Smith 6-3, to book a date with Michael Van Gerwen in round two. The Welshman averaged 101.86, notched a 142 checkout, and pulled away from 3-3 to set up a repeat of his Champions League semi final of two weeks ago.
Another meeting between two top sixteen players resulted in Dave Chisnall seeing off Simon Whitlock 6-4, earning the St Helens’ man a match against 2018 World Champion Rob Cross.
Raymond van Barneveld’s Dutch swan song will be against his compatriot, Jermaine Wattimena. “Machine Gun” secured an impressive 6-4 win against the quality German, Gabriel Clemens. Wattimena was 7/8 on his doubles on the night.
Match of the night was Krzysztof Ratajski’s stunning 6-5 win against UK Open Champion, and US Master, Nathan Aspinall. The match was full of 180’s and quality finishes, and Ratajski sealed the match in five darts, a 177 followed by double ten sealing his passage through to the next round, where he will meet Daryl Gurney.
Mensur Suljovic overcame Kyle Anderson 6-1 in a real poor affair, where the Australian in particular was well below par. Suljovic now plays Damon Heta for a place in the last eight.
Jonny Clayton will hope for a repeat of his stunning 6-0 win against James Wade, as he confirmed a rematch in a scrappy 6-4 win against Wolverhampton’s Wayne Jones.
Ian White will hope to go deep in this tournament, but he nearly let a 3-0 lead slip before edging Ricky Evans 6-5. “Diamond” White’s next opponent will be Peter Wright.
Danny Noppert got the better of his countryman, Jeffrey de Zwaan 6-3, and his next assignment will be against Gary Anderson.
